This passage is a pinnacle moment in the whole Gospel, best read in the context of the wider passage, John 18: 12 – 19: 16. The Gospel writers seem to present Pilate as being trapped at this point, seeking constantly to be in control of the situation, if not set Jesus fee. In the middle, Pilate asks Jesus, “what is truth?” And so we ponder this question and the question of “truth” in the light of our own Christian faith and the world in which we find ourselves.
