The story of Job seems to polarise people quite dramatically: some find comfort in the sense of God’s creative power and might, while others criticise God for being remote and uncaring, if not in some way responsible for Job’s suffering. Written predominantly as poetry, it highlights the fragility of human life, the injustice of the world, and the range of emotions directed towards God as we deal with our existential angst. In Job 38, God speaks from within the whirlwind. While God’s speech does not answer Job’s questions or accusations, the imagery invites us into a deeper reflection on both suffering and God within the very real circumstances of our everyday lives.
